As you all know for the past few months our monthly activities calendar has included “Big Creek Missions”. Since they have not had the privilege of being properly introduced, I would like to take the time to do so now.
In 2002 students with the Chilhowee Baptist Association recognized the need to serve the wonderful people of the Appalachia. Their desire to serve residents by providing free home repairs, community programs, and children's programs was the foundation in which Big Creek Missions was built upon. Seven years later the mission is still expanding and going strong, with over 1,700 individuals volunteering their time to assist with the programs. Big Creek Mission volunteers range in ages from 6th grade to retirement and provide services without regard to race, religion, or social standing.
Through partnerships with multiple churches, the association began a mission that would offer a quality trip to local students while reaching out to people in one of the neediest areas of the country, southeast Kentucky. Some volunteers have traveled from as far away as Florida, Texas, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire, with each volunteer returning home with a renewed passion for missions and ministry. Today, their ministry center’s doors continue to expand to include a local food pantry, clothing distribution, sports leagues, and multiple other ministries.
Each week inspirational volunteers come to visit our center with their time focused on not one, but all of our clients. We laugh, sing, dance and praise God for the many blessings he has provided us in our lives. The volunteers provide an activity filled day to any client that may want to play a game of pool, a card game, or even participate in a big group doing the Cha-Cha slide. For those not looking for activities, they can simply sit and socialize with the younger generation. Each week our clients look forward to having the wonderful groups of volunteers from the Big Creek Missions come to visit with us.
In the time that they have spent with us at LKLP Compassionate Hearts, we have formed an ever-lasting bond of friendship that will remain in our hearts forever. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the volunteers of the Big Creek Missions program and thank them for their time and dedication to a program that has helped so many - May God Bless you, as you have blessed others!

Compassionate Hearts Program Highlights
On any given day, the sounds of laughter radiate within the walls of the adult day center. It’s a place where smiles fill the room and friendships are made; a helping hand is offered… and gratefully accepted. Not only do clients benefit from the socialization and therapeutic recreational activities, they also receive nutritious meals, skilled nursing care, assistance with showers and personal care, and medication administration and wound care, if needed. Whether it be an Alzheimer's patient who needs supervision and socialization during the day, or a patient with paralysis who needs assistance with even the most basic needs, adult day care provides individualized care to meet each patient’s needs and enhance their quality of life.
It has been 5 years since LKLP acquired our adult day health care program from Horizon. The adult day center was in the process of being closed down, which would have stripped the community of a much needed service. Over the past 5 years, our adult day center has served 106 unduplicated elderly and disabled adult clients, many of whom would have otherwise been admitted to a nursing home. For these individuals, it means an improved quality of life. Instead of staying home alone each day, they are now able to socialize with others, receive hot meals during the day, and receive assistance with their daily health needs. For some, it means they are able to live at home with their families for the remainder of their life. For others, it means they are able to continue to live independently at home with the assistance of adult day care. And for the families of these individuals, it means they are able to continue to work and carry out their daily routines, knowing their loved one is being cared for in a safe, loving environment.
The adult day health center currently enrolls 31 clients from Perry and surrounding counties, ranging in age from 21-94 years old. We provide care to adults with a variety of needs, including those who suffer from strokes, heart attacks, brain injuries, and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as those with congenital abnormalities like spina bifida, Down’s syndrome, and mental retardation, to name a few. Our staff consists of registered and licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, and a social worker. Our daytime services allow individuals to receive needed care at the adult day center while their family members are able to work and carry out their daily routines, thus delaying or altogether eliminating the potential need for nursing home placement.
In difficult economic times such as this, we continue to advocate for the continuity of funding for community based services, like adult day care, which provide the needed support and services that allow individuals to receive the care they require, while remaining in the comfort of their home as they age.
We continue to follow up on referrals we receive from the community. If you know of someone who needs assistance with their daily needs and might benefit from adult day care, please contact the center at 606-436-8700.
Compassionate Hearts FAQ
Compassionate Hearts provides traditional nursing services during the daytime hours only. Our participants return home to their families in the evenings. This arrangement enables family members to fulfill their daily responsibilities, provides the loved one with opportunities for socializing and rehabilitiation and allows all members of the family to come back together at the end of the day. We offer skilled nursing care, recreational activities, and rehabilitative services like those found in a nursing home. We even provide the occassional field trip for those interested and able to attend.
How can Compassionate Hearts benefit your family?
Compassionate Hearts gives the caregiver the freedom to fulfill daily responsibilities and the reassurance of knowing their loved one has companionship and comprehensive, quality care throughout the day. In addition, Compassionate Hearts also provides these significant benefits for the loved one:
- Increased social contact with other people;
- Increased sense of independence through stimulating programs and trips;
- Physical and mental exercise to help maintain physical and mental abilities;
- Skilled nursing care by registered nurses who can identify and care for challenging needs;
- Personal care, including assistance with meals, toileting, and daily living needs; and
- The postponement or elimination of long-term nursing home care.
