About the Nutrition Program

The LKLP Nutrition Program consists of three areas:  Congregate Meals, Home Delivered Meals and Home Care Meals.

The Congregate Meals component consists of a setting, which gives seniors an opportunity to participate in activities and attend informational sessions about additional services they may be able to access.  All seniors are encouraged to become active in the congregate site in their own community.

The Home-Delivered Meals aspect of the program is for elderly that are homebound and not able to cook for themselves.  They have no one else in the home who is able to prepare meals for them.

The Nutrition Program also serves some Home Care Meals to clients that are receiving other services from the Home Care Program.  This part of the program serves elderly individuals at risk of going into a nursing home.

Nutrition Program Highlights

The LKLP Nutrition Program staff is incompliance with several new regulations passed this program year. All staff that work in the kitchen with food handling and preparation was certified last June and will have to be recertified this July for Food Handlers and Food Management. This is a good law because it will help protect our clients from food borne illnesses.

The staff also had a new project for the winter months this program year. We were fortunate to receive some Federal Stimulus funds for emergency meals to be delivered to our home-delivered meals clients. These meals were very beneficial because we could send out emergency meals for 5 days at a time. These meals allowed us to serve the clients during the severe winter months, when we were not able to travel to their homes because of the snow and ice on the roads.

This program year we have served the following meals in Perry County:

Congregate Meals               10920
Home-Delivered Meals         13127
Home Care                            951
Total Meals Served              24998

Please check on the elderly in your community during the severe weather months this summer.

Our LKLP Nutrition Program Staff wishes a happy, safe and healthy summer to all staff and board members and their families.
