About Self-Help Parent

Serving:  Leslie, Knott, Letcher and Perry Counties

The LKLP Parent's Self-Help Project is an ongoing program for parents who are in need of learning more and better parenting skills. Court ordered referrals and DCBS referrals are accepted, but parents can attend without being referred.

Parents will learn about building their own self-esteem as well as the self-esteem of their children. They will also learn new discipline and behavior management techniques. They are encouraged to contribute to class discussions to express their opinions and needs.

Substance abuse isn't the only cause for child abuse and neglect, but it has multiplied the problems in our immediate and surrounding counties. Neglect is becoming more of a problem than abuse. Parents referred with substance abuse problems are required to complete a substance abuse recovery program in addition to parenting classes in order to regain custody of their children.

Educating parents on potential childcare problems, before they arise, is very important in the prevention of abuse and neglect. For example, many new parents have no idea of what a great responsibility everyday care of an infant can be. Information on problems such as shaken baby syndrome is very crucial, since the damage cannot usually be reversed.

During the next year, the goal of the Self-Help Parenting Program is to:

  • Concentrate more on prevention of child abuse and neglect by educating parents through parenting workshops and classes.
  • Help parents that have abused their children learn non-abusive behavior and better parenting skills.
  • Distribute prevention of child abuse and neglect materials to more agencies that generally have contact with parents.

Our goal is to serve at least 1500 parents during the 2008-2009 program year.

Self-Help Parent Program Philosophy

The program's philosophy is built around the premise that parenting is a learned behavior, and that old, undesirable patterns of interactions can be replaced with new and more desirable ones.

Self-Help Parent Program Highlights

As another program year is coming to an end and I have accomplished a lot, but there is still much to be done. Child abuse and neglect are still on the rise. I have conducted parent education classes for approximately 1400 duplicated clients during the past year. The majority of these clients have exhibited better parenting skills and have increased their determination to build better lives for themselves and their children.

In order to stop the cycle of abuse and neglect, parents need knowledge about the stages of growth and development children go through. Many of these parents were raised in abusive homes and pattern their parenting skills after their own parents. They need new parenting skills and attitudinal and behavioral changes to break out of this cycle.

Through LKLP Self-Help Parent Education Classes, I help parents understand age appropriate behavior for their children.   Just learning that many problems they are experiencing are just phases children go through, gives them hope and shows them there is a light at the end of the tunnel. They learn appropriate disciplining techniques and methods for correcting their children.

During the next program year I plan to reach out to more parents before child abuse and neglect occur, because an ounce of prevention is truly better than a pound of cure.
