About Self-Help Parent

Serving:  Leslie, Knott, Letcher and Perry Counties

The LKLP Parent's Self-Help Project is an ongoing program for parents who are in need of learning more and better parenting skills. Court ordered referrals and DCBS referrals are accepted, but parents can attend without being referred.

Parents will learn about building their own self-esteem as well as the self-esteem of their children. They will also learn new discipline and behavior management techniques. They are encouraged to contribute to class discussions to express their opinions and needs.

Substance abuse isn't the only cause for child abuse and neglect, but it has multiplied the problems in our immediate and surrounding counties. Neglect is becoming more of a problem than abuse. Parents referred with substance abuse problems are required to complete a substance abuse recovery program in addition to parenting classes in order to regain custody of their children.

Educating parents on potential childcare problems, before they arise, is very important in the prevention of abuse and neglect. For example, many new parents have no idea of what a great responsibility everyday care of an infant can be. Information on problems such as shaken baby syndrome is very crucial, since the damage cannot usually be reversed.

During the next year, the goal of the Self-Help Parenting Program is to:

  • Concentrate more on prevention of child abuse and neglect by educating parents through parenting workshops and classes.
  • Help parents that have abused their children learn non-abusive behavior and better parenting skills.
  • Distribute prevention of child abuse and neglect materials to more agencies that generally have contact with parents.

Our goal is to serve at least 1500 parents during the 2008-2009 program year.

Self-Help Parent Program Philosophy

The program's philosophy is built around the premise that parenting is a learned behavior, and that old, undesirable patterns of interactions can be replaced with new and more desirable ones.

Self-Help Parent Program Highlights

As another program year ends, I continue to work with parents that are abusing their children to help prevent further abuse. There are many causes of child abuse including poorly learned parenting skills, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and financial problems.

Parent Self Help classes offer parents the opportunity to re-learn parenting skills and change attitudes and behaviors through classes utilizing an evidence-based parenting curriculum.

Parents that have never abused their children may not realize that there is a completely different world out there where abuse and neglect are rampant as drug use increases. Many parents use food money for drug money, leaving their children undernourished. Many small babies are left in cribs for the bigger part of their first year of life while their parents are drug impaired. Many parents bring their child car seats into the house and strap infants and toddlers into these all day long. This greatly impairs the growth and development during these most important stages of their children’s lives.

I have mentioned just a few of the abuse and neglect problems I have encountered. Child abuse and neglect are such major problems and I do not take my obligation lightly. I believe that the LKLP Self Help Parent Education Program is a great help in the cessation and eradication of child abuse.
